The Presbyterian Heresy

Standard

It’s Infant Baptism of Course. But Why, and What is Baptism Anyway.

The Presbyterian church believes that baptism was a ” sign and a seal” . It is a common view but not a Biblical one. The Bible describes circumcision as a sign and a seal only.

Today I’ll just look at this passage.

Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells sbodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

As water baptism requires hands, I don’t think it is too big a leap to assume they refer to the baptism of the Holy Spirit, as it fits the description.

And lets consider the meaning of sign and seal. These are physical things that can be seen, not that we want to see a circumsion, baptism will make you wet for a time, but it is not a lasting thing. We dry off. The Holy Spirit is what lasts and makes a Christian different.

Here’s another question, how can you be buried with Christ in baptism by being sprinkled with water?

The early baptisms were done in a river, so it is logical to believe they involved immersion as this verse speaks of being buried and raised.
